I stood in line at the bakery last week.
I knew the woman behind me , but honestly did not have the energy to fake a "hi, how are you?"
Instead I played the 'I have no idea who you are' card.
What? Oh, it's totally fair game, stop judging.
People play it on me all of the time. I make direct eye contact, they clearly see me seeing them, and BOOM just like that they go to a blank stare and look the other way. It's the "I have no idea who you are ' card.
Everyone plays it at one point in their lives.
My daughter was with me, as we browsed the cake case.
"I'll take that one with the buttercream, please", I whispered to the clerk. Apparently a low disguised voice is a good friend to the' I have no idea who you are' card.
"Oh, just so you know, our credit card machine is down, only cash" answered the clerk.
"Can you break a hundred?" screeched the voice behind me.
"Showoff", whispered my daughter, on cue. (I love that kid)
And that my friends, is why I pretend I don't know people.
It's a necessary evil and their punishment for being obnoxious.
Okay, I'm going to hell for that one.
But when I get there? I'm totally pretending I don't know anyone .
